Leading UK film reviewer and critic Jason Solomons, well known for his red carpet interviews with the stars at the world’s big film events, will share his knowledge with local journalists.

Fresh from the 2017 Bafta and Oscars ceremonies, the much respected interviewer, broadcaster and author makes his way to Trinidad on Thursday to lead a three-day workshop in film reviewing for a group of local media arts writers.

In a collaboration between the Bocas Lit Fest, The British Council Caribbean and the University of the West Indies World Festival of Emerging Cinema, a dozen writers will hone their critical writing skills under Solomons’ guidance.

A release said it is the third in a series of writer development workshops created by the Bocas Lit Fest, intended to enrich the cultural milieu and to feed back into arts practice.

According to Bocas founder Marina Salandy-Brown it is an important piece of the culture jigsaw. “Writers, film directors, visual artists, musicians, dramaturges, actors, all want and need to know how the audience is responding to their work. That is where analysis and critiquing of the work comes in. We are helping media writers to better understand the craft and enhance how they share with us what they have experienced. That way they help to grow our knowledge.” She added, “I would like to see a lot more informed arts reviewing in the media. That is our aim, and we hope to continue this series of workshops.”

To date, a workshop in food writing took place in collaboration with the Ministry of Food Production and Agriculture. In January, literary and visual arts reviewing workshops were held in Jamaica for writers from around the region, in collaboration with the British Council and the Department of Literatures in English University of the West Indies, Mona.
