Spoilt Rotten Kids will hit the stage in the small band category of the first Junior Carnival competition to be held today at St Anthony’s College Grounds, Westmoorings, from 12.
Their 2016 presentation, The Big Easy, was conceptualised by the three Inniss sisters—Terry-Ann, Christine and Elizabeth. The sisters said the idyllic surroundings of the St Anthony’s Grounds was perfect for the portrayal of the rich cultural heritage of New Orleans, the Louisiana city on the Mississippi River nicknamed “The Big Easy.”
The prize-winning band has competed from the inception of the St Anthony’s College Junior Carnival competition 11 years ago. The Inniss sisters are now marking their 15th year of making kiddies mas. Because of the economic decline, the sisters said they kept their costumes at affordable prices.
Sections in the band include The French Quarter, a special section for girls ten and over; That Ole Black Magic, for girls nine and over; Alligator Alley, for boys nine and over; All That Jazz, for boys six to eight; Blue Bayou, for girls four to six; Mardi Gras Madness, for girls seven to nine; Crayfish Jamboree, for boys two to five; Sweet Magnolia Blossoms, for girls two to three. All sections were sold out.
The band will also take part in the Red Cross Children’s competition on January 30, St James Junior Carnival Competition on January 31, the National Carnival Commission’s Children’s parade on Carnival Saturday in Port-of-Spain, and the Downtown Carnival competition on Carnival Sunday.
The sisters said they started out making costumes for their own children (some adults and some teenagers today) and for their children’s friends. Members of the public also joined them. Today, they continue the tradition of making mas for their close relatives and friends.
