Humble wedding cake toppers began to make their first appearances as early as the 19th Century. During those times, they were handmade and simplistic, and were usually in the form of flowers. After World War I, however, the trend picked up momentum. It was during the early 1920s that more affluent American families started using cake toppers which are somewhat similar to what we know today–figurines of the bride and groom.
During the 1950s, large American department stores started selling cake toppers through their catalogues to a wider customer base. Later on, at the end of the 20th Century, wedding cake toppers began to carry different designs, such as: doves, bells and cupids.
Today’s couples more than likely want to represent either their relationship, profession, favourite movies, hobbies or their wedding décor with their cake topper. Even the more traditional couples have a wide range of “bride and groom” cake topper choices. There are now different poses, ethnicities and garments. Cake toppers have even evolved to include the pets of the bride and groom.
Here are five of the more popular options for this year:
“Scripted”—These cake toppers come in thin sheet metal with a spike that sticks into the cake. They often feature fancy lettering of various phrases or groups of words, for eg, “Always & Forever” or “Finally Mr & Mrs” or even something as simple as “Love.”
Handmade—Do-it-Yourself brides will favour quirky, personalised wedding toppers made from polymer clay, wood, felt, fabric, bent wire and papier mache. Many of these types of toppers feature alphabet letters or pairs of animals such as owls, foxes and birds.
Silhouettes—representing the facial profiles of the couple or perhaps a generic bride and groom dancing are trendy for 2015. These are often made from thin black acrylic or metal.
Bunting—These cake toppers look like tiny banners held together by wooden sticks. They often feature the couples’ names or a special message
Monograms—Crystal monograms or lettering as cake toppers have continued in popularity but this year, pearl monograms will be a trendier option.
