As Alta continues annual student registration at classes across Trinidad, we rally our readers to share the message of our anti-stigma campaign: No shame. Go brave. You can read.
Students who benefitted from the Alta programme this past year will continue to share their experiences in the hope that more persons will have the courage to step into a class.
This week, three students write about how Alta has made a difference in their lives.
Alta helps me in many ways. Alta helps me by starting at a low level so I can learn to correct my problem areas.
As long as you keep coming to Alta you learn, as the teachers take their time and go through the work step by step. They make sure you don’t get lost. If you do get lost the teacher sits with you and does one on one work to make sure you get it.
Alta helps me a lot by showing me my problems. I am learning the reading rules like the (VCCV). The rule is used to break up big words into syllables so I can sound out the word.
Alta also shows you how to sign forms for jobs. For example, reading lessons teach you what to do if there is a fire at your home.
The lesson told me that a fire can overcome you in minutes and also said if there is a fire put a damp cloth over my face and drop down on all fours and get out as fast as you can. These are life lessons and I benefit from them all.
Alta also gives my family that feeling to know that there are people out there willing to take time to help fix our problems.
Now my mom knows through the Alta program someday I will get a job to take care of myself and a future family. I will like to thank the sponsors for lending a hand. Without the kindness there will not be a future for some people of T&T.

Alta helps me to read, write and spell better. That’s what I like about Alta. I thank you for the opportunity to improve my reading and spelling. To keep Alta classes running over and over and over again. Thank you for the opportunity for teaching us.

I can read a little better. I have improved on my writing. I feel more confident. Just knowing that someone else is interested in my education makes me feel appreciated.
