Ever thought fat would be of use in your breast? Well believe it or not, it can be. Yes, fat is a bad word. It is the cause of loads of health problems, not to mention a headache for a wardrobe but in the world of breast health, it has some real benefits. So I thought I would write about five fun facts about fat:

1. All breasts have a layer of fat covering it and some forms of breast tissue which has fat within it called ‘fatty breast tissue’.
2. If you have large breast and are overweight, losing weight does not lead to a smaller breast. So if you wanted a breast reduction, going on a diet will not help get you into that smaller cup size.
3. In pregnancy your breast will gain more fat as a way to hold more milk and also to allow baby to suckle easier.
4. Fat grafting has revolutionised breast cancer reconstruction in the last ten years. I will write more about fat grafting next week.
5. Men can have fatty breast, too—it’s called fatty gynaecomastia. This is very different from breast cancer and can often cause breast development in men in either one breast or both.

However, it is important to note that fat in your breast is very different in how it affects your health and breast cancer development with total body fat. Whilst there is no evidence that high breast fat increase the risk of breast cancer or other problems like heart disease or diabetes, we all know that obesity (total body fat) has a negative impact on your health and is also a risk factor in the development of breast cancer.
