Jazz lovers can get ready for a thrilling exchange of musical ideas and melodies when celebrated Cuban saxophonist Emir Santa Cruz performs in Port-of-Spain at the end of this month.

Hosted by the Ethnic Jazz Club (EJC), the concerts are scheduled for June 27 and 28 at the Jazz Studio, 51 Cornelio Street, Woodbrook, a release said.

For several years EJC founder and musician Chantal Esdelle has enjoyed an enduring relationship with the jazz community in Havana.

Starting with a 2003 visit by musician Bellita and Jazztumbata, Esdelle’s efforts have brought about collaborations with the Cuba Centre for Popular Music which facilitates access to Cuban jazz musicians for shows and workshops held in Trinidad.

Esdelle hopes to further cement Cuba’s links with Trinidad through Santa Cruz’ upcoming visit, while providing ready opportunities for learning and development between both countries.

Already the Cubans have reciprocated by featuring Trinidad jazz music on Radio Taino and by presenting live Trinidad acts in Havana at Amadeo Roldan, the National Theatre and Café Miramar (jazz club), to name a few.

Born in Havana in 1983, Santa Cruz began his musical training on the piano at the tender age of four. He then graduated from his first arts college, specialised on the clarinet. In 1998 he continued his studies at the Amadeo Roldan Conservatory, where he participated in JOJazz, a youth jazz showcase and competition. He copped third-place honours in 2001 for interpretation, and placed second in 2002 for composition—both admirable feats.

Santa Cruz subsequently began studies at the Instituto Superior de Arte de Cuba, well known for producing some of Cuba’s finest musicians such as Roberto Fonseca, Gonzal Rubalcaba and Horacio El Negro Hernandez.

Apart from the two nights of performances, with two sessions being staged on each night, Santa Cruz will host a workshop and presentation on June 26 for seasoned and budding musicians.

Performing alongside the visiting saxophonist will be Esdelle on keys, Douglas Redon (bass), Donald Noel (percussion) and Kyle Noel (drums).

Members of the public are invited to come and experience a touch of Cuba in Trinidad. Reservations are strongly advised as there is limited space.
