“Too many of our young men are still dying—83 per cent of all fatal crashes in our country are young men under the age of 35 years,” said Arrive Alive president Sharon Inglefield as she welcomed participants in the November 23 Arrive Alive Remember Me Walk and Ride. Held at the Queen’s Park Savannah, Port-of-Spain, Inglefield also appealed to the young men driving on the nation’s roads to Designate a Sober Driver; Leave the Speeding for the Track and for the Rallies; Buckle Up in the Front & Back Seats; Put away your mobile phones! Have fun but be responsible’.”

She added: “Arrive Alive is not about ‘kill joy’ but about living selflessly and good with people.”

Held on the weekend after UN World Day of Remembrance is observed globally, the day was blessed with a great turnout of cyclists, walkers and runners, together with family and friends of those who have lost loved ones on our nation’s roads. Despite reports of inclement weather around the country, the conditions were perfect throughout the event.

November 30 has been dedicated every year around the world in remembrance of the millions of individuals killed or injured in road crashes.

Additionally, the day is designed to bringing together and providing support for those families, loved ones and communities that have been affected by these tragedies; all those loss but never forgotten. It pays tribute to the emergency response personnel, police and medical professionals who have to deal with these traumatic events day after day.

Arrive Alive Remembrance Day activities included a Road Safety Park of educational booths manned by the Australian High Commission, T&T Automobile Association, T&T Police Service, the emergency response services to include the Ambulance, Global Medical Response of T&T and Traffic Wardens under the Ministry of Works & Infrastructure, as well as other NGOs like Citizens Against Dangerous Driving and Share the Road.

Inglefield said: “We wish to thank our principal sponsor BHP Billiton for their donation in making this annual event successful and to all those stakeholders and entertainers who came out in support of road safety.”
